Why You'll Love This Recipe
Asian desserts are the best because they are never too sweet and always focus on the true natural flavours of the dish instead of overpowering it with decadence or sweetness! This delightful strawberry sago treat combines the sweetness of fresh strawberries with the rich creaminess of chocolate, all in a chewy and textured sago base. I love this for dessert but I would also honestly eat it for breakfast too!
Another great thing about this recipe is the simplicity. It's extremely easy to make with minimal ingredients (as are all of my recipes!).
Lastly, this recipe uses strawberries, which have to be up there with one of my favourite fruits, especially my favourite berry!
Before getting stuck into the recipe, I want to highlight that this recipe was inspired by Oatside, an asian oatmilk company. I have adapted their mango sago recipe to suit a strawberry sago recipe, using their delicious chocolate oatmilk!

Variations and additional toppings for Strawberry Sago with Chocolate
There are some simple variations and substitutions that can be made to this delicious asian dessert recipe:
- Sprinkle some grated dark chocolate or cocoa powder for an added chocolatey touch.
- Make your own chocolate milk by blending together 1 ยฝ cups of plant milk of choice, 3 tablespoon of cacao or cocoa powder, and 2-3 tablespoon of coconut sugar.
- Replace chocolate milk with plain oatmilk, soy milk, or almond milk. If it is an unsweetened milk you may need to blend 2-3 tablespoon of sugar to suit your taste.
- Substitute the strawberries for blueberries, raspberries, or a combination of strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries.
- For a tropical twist, substitute the strawberries with diced mango or pineapple. If you do this I recommend using sweetened plant milk instead of chocolate milk.

Further expert tips for making Strawberry Sago with Chocolate
Can I use tapioca pearls instead of sago?
Tapioca pearls can be used as a substitute, but the texture and cooking time may vary. Check the packet instructions for guidance.
Can I use other types of milk instead of chocolate milk?
Yes, you can use regular milk or other plant-based milk alternatives, but it may alter the flavor slightly. Refer to the blog notes above on recipe variations for further advice on the type of milk to use and fruit flavour combinations.
Can I make this dessert in advance?
Yes, you can prepare the asian dessert a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator. The sago will remain fresh for 2-3 days. If you are making ahead I would recommend to keep the strawberries in an airtight container in the fridge and popping on top right before serving.
Can I use frozen strawberries?
Fresh strawberries are recommended for the best flavor and texture. If you want to use frozen berries I would recommend using frozen blueberries or raspberries instead. The texture of frozen blueberries and raspberries I personally find better once defrosted in this dessert. Regardless, you can use frozen strawberries if that is your preference.
