The Burger Diaries is blog series dedicated to finding the best vegan burger in KL. One man, one mission, many burgers. This weeks review will be on Lisettes Vegan Burger.
First Impressions
The first thing that struck me about this burger was the delightfully fresh smell – the striking freshness of the cashewnut mayo and the pickle, combined with the herbs and spices in the patty had my mouth watering before the waiter had even put it down on the table.
From the moment it hit the table I felt there was no time to waste – a few rapid photos to help me reminisce and then it was time for the first bite.
Initial Assessment
The burger is a great size, I’ve found at times vegan burgers can be on the small side, but not this burger – it was a full jaw extension to be able to attack the burger from bun to bun.
The burger immediately gives the impression it’s going to have that light and fresh taste – the avocado, pickle, lettuce and Spanish onion toppings, combined with the delicious fragrance from the cashewnut mayo come together brilliantly to both look and smell fresh and light.
Plated nicely with a generous serving of potato fries there was definitely no buyer’s remorse from this transaction.
The Juicy Details
The Patty
Made from quinoa and edamame the patty was crispy and had a depth of complexity that I haven’t experienced before in a vegan patty. The mixture of herbs and spices in the patty give it a long lingering flavour that I was happy to savour between bites. The texture of the patty was excellent and it didn’t crumble onto the plate thanks to the light frying.
The Toppings
The combination of the toppings is superbly curated, very simple but makes the burger feel light and fresh. Avocado, lettuce, Spanish onion, watercress, vegan cheese and…… a delicious pickle. Now I know pickle on a burger can polarise the crowd, but this pickle was the keystone of this burger, it was the culinary bridge between the fresh flavours of the burger toppings with the complex and intriguing spices in the patty. Thou shall not remove this pickle! You cant have nasi lemak without sambal, and you cant have the Lisettes vegan burger without the pickle!
The Sauce
The cashewnut mayo is a fabulous sauce for this burger, it follows the theme of the light and fresh flavours and doesn’t overpower any of the flavours in the patty. A delicious complement to a delightfully crafted burger.
The Bun
The only area for improvement on this burger was the bun, it was overly doughy (even though it was quite thin) and could have been improved with a light toasting to take away that doughy texture.
The Wrap Up
- A fresh fusion of flavours that compliment each other
- A delicious patty full of flavour and simple yet delicious toppings
