Are you looking for a vegan gluten free brownie recipe? These vegan chickpea brownies are your answer! Dairy free, egg free, and flour free.... all bound together with one secret ingredient, chickpeas! Made with healthy, vegan ingredients, but with absolutely no compromise on that fudgey brownie flavour.
Vegan Chickpea Brownies. Can I Use Any Other Bean?
Yes you can! This recipe specifically calls for chickpeas. However, you can actually use 1.5 cups of any type of bean. I have successfully used borlotti beans before. I have shared this recipe with borlotti beans on both my Pinterest and Instagram pages.
Alternatively, you could also try the recipe with kidneys beans, or black beans. Popular blogger, Chocolate Covered Katie does a great vegan black bean recipe that you can find here (although not 100% gluten free because it contains oats).
Does This Recipe Use Flour Or Oats?
No! These vegan chickpea brownies do not contain any type of flour, or any oats. Some brownie recipes may claim to be gluten free by using gluten free flour, or rolled oats. Honestly, if your aim is to be gluten free, it is often best to avoid any kind of flour all together.
Controversially, rolled oats are actually not considered gluten free. This is because they are manufactured in the same facility as gluten containing grains like wheat, rye, and barley. They are also often grown alongside the same gluten containing crops, using the same equipment, thus contaminating the oats. You can read more about it here
Regardless, the point I'm trying to make is that you can be rest assured that these brownies are truly vegan gluten free brownies!
Are They Sugar Free?
Although refined sugar free, these vegan chickpea brownies are not considered sugar free due to the agave syrup. If you want to use a syrup with a lower fructose level, then you can substitute the agave syrup for pure maple syrup. I use agave syrup because it is a more cost effective ingredient compared to maple syrup.
Can I store The Vegan Chickpea Brownies In The Fridge For Later?
Absolutely! Just make sure to store them in an airtight container, or wrap them to ensure that they don't go dry and stale. These will store in your fridge for up to a week (if you can manage to resist them!). The texture will be different when they are cold, with the dark chocolate chips solidifying. I actually prefer the chocolate when its a little bit harder and crunchier. This of course opens up the is chocolate better cold or room temperature debate....it's completely up to you!
Do I Need To Separate The Chocolate Chips?
You can if you want. However I think blending the chocolate chips gives you a richer brownie flavour. Also, the one thing I love about this recipe is the simplicity of it. All you need to do is add all of the ingredients to a food processor, blend, and then bake!
You could save some choc chips to stir in prior to baking. If you try this then let me know!

Do I Need Any Special Equipment?
You will need a food processor. The batter is quite thick, and your average blender won't work. Simply add all ingredients to the food processor, and blend for approximately 1 minute, stopping to scrape down the sides as needed.
