This recipe uses real durian fruit to make an easy 3 ingredient durian ice cream recipe that can also be made dairy free. Made with just real durian flesh, whipping cream and condensed milk, this recipe can also be made with or without an ice cream maker.
Durian is a famous stinky asian fruit that is known as the King of fruits. It is a polarising asian fruit that is loved and hated by many. You might have already guessed it, but I fall into the "love" category when it comes this fruit. It is currently durian season here in Malaysia and this wonderful stinky fruit can be bought almost anywhere.
If durian is too strong of a flavour for you but you really want to like this fruit, then I suggest that you try jackfruit first. Jackfruit is in the same family as the durian and as a similar stinkiness but it is way less smelly and very sweet. I also make delicious jackfruit ice cream and jackfruit sorbet recipes.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
I love this recipe because it only uses 3 ingredients and its dairy free! It's so easy to make and it's so deliciously creamy. If you are using an ice cream maker or a ninja creami then this recipe will turn out better than any durian ice cream you have bought form the store or shop. Even if you aren't using the churn method, this durian ice cream will turn out amazing!.
Ingredients
To make this delicious dairy free durian ice cream you will need:
Durian
Real durian!! 4-5 durian seeds. This is about half of a large durian or 1 small durian. If you are lucky enough to live in Asia then you can buy this fruit all year round but it is best to buy in season. This fruit is also exported globally and can be sourced from your local Asian market.
Coconut Whipping Cream
400ml whipping cream. You can use any type of whipping cream but I choose to use a coconut whipping cream to make this a dairy free recipe. The whipping cream is what makes this ice cream so light and fluffy.
Condensed milk
⅓ cup condensed milk. I use an oat milk condensed milk to make this a dairy free recipe but you can use whatever condensed milk you choose. Condensed milk is used to sweeten the ice cream. Using condensed milk instead of sugar also creates a creamier texture as ice crystals are less like to form.
How To Make Durian Ice Cream
Making this durian ice cream is easy. All you need to do is:
- Remove the seeds from the durian flesh.
- Add the durian, whipping cream, and condensed milk to a blender. Blend smooth. The mixture should be fluffy and creamy. Do not over blend or over whip the mixture. I find that 15 seconds using a high speed blender is enough.
- If using an ice cream maker, pour the mixture into the ice cream maker and turn on.
- If using a ninja creami, pour the mixture into a creami cup and freeze over night, ready to be whipped on the low fat ice cream setting the next day
- If using a food processor or blender, pour the mixture into an ice tray and freeze over night. When ready to be served, blend the frozen cubes in a blender or food processor. Stop / starting to scrape and mix as necessary.
